Flawed Beauty

Women in black with matchy matchy bags.
She is beautiful, with her huge round eyes, a tall nose and sculptured lips. Her straight tress flows down as smooth as silk. When she laughs, a high bubbly chime sounds, unadulterated joy and child-like innocence radiating from her melodious laughter. How limpid the sound. When she speaks, a tinkling bundle of ebullience rings and her eyes alight with a twinkling effervescence. One just cannot help but be captivated by her bright personality.

We met when we were in the same room for class. I happened to be nearby, and we hit it off immediately, as if we’ve known each other for a long time. That, was something that rarely occurred to me. Sharing things was not in my list of fortes and in that moment, my mind must have lost it because before I knew it, I was telling her things only known to few.

If you look at her, she may just be like any other girl out there with a pretty face. However, she is special. Standing only at five feet one, she is petite and fun-sized, but what she lacks in height, she makes up for in heart. She is magnanimous and altruistic and is a firm believer of happiness. She has a kind and pure heart that only few possess these days. Truly a gem, she is. She believes in the good of others and gives them the benefit of the doubt. That being said, she does not judge a person by its cover until she’s read the entire story.

She has simple dreams, but she has unfazed visions as well. She is clear about her aims and goals in life. She has organisational skills that is envied by many, and disciplinary skills that is indubitably rare these days. A perfectionist, one would call it. Furthermore, she is diligent and conscientious with whatever she does. She does not carry out tasks half-heartedly and will not rest until she succeeds, something that is not achieved by many.

She is honest with her thoughts and straightforward but not blunt and ill-mannered. She chooses her words with care for fear of hurting others’ feelings. Being the sensitive being that she is, she does not disregard others’ feelings so easily because she understands while words can be a sweet haven of confectioneries, they can also be a noxious pool of venom.

However, being the beautiful and outstanding person that she already is, she is still human. She is not perfect. She is afraid of many things. We joke one too many times about her being a coward, she admits and laughs along with us. She gets hurt easily, when people often misunderstand her, when people do not see her for who she really is. She makes mistakes, she falls but she gets back up on her two small feet again because she’s a fighter. She gets frustrated when things don’t go as planned because she’s a perfectionist and that might very well be her downfall one day, because too much of a good thing can be a bad thing ultimately. Like I said, she is not perfect, she is flawed, she is human.

But being human with flaws is why I love her.

Because she is the best that she can possibly be,

Because she is who she is.

Because she is my dear friend,

Wong Pui Yen.

Little by little,
she entered my heart.
Slowly, insidiously, beautifully.

P.S. These thoughts have been in my head for a while now. In light of recent events, I got to know more about you and I felt the surge of energy and inspiration to write this. So, thank you for being my friend. :)
